The Project

August. 2007. There I am, preparing to be on the BookTelevision reality show version of the 3-Day Novel contest, and not remotely in my right mind. And one of my friends says to me, “You should record a 3-Day album next year.”

Being a completely crazy person at this point, desperately preparing an outline and packing reference materials and a tent for my lockdown in Chapters, I agree that this is a fine idea. I’ve been wanting to work with Chris Nash, so I ask him if he’s interested in producing, arranging, and whatnot, in his brilliantly designed home studio.

Chris does not have the excuse of being a crazy person, but says yes anyway. We agree to record on the Labour Day weekend in 2008.

I write songs.

August 2008 arrives and we prepare to enter the studio. I send Chris very rough versions of the songs. He thinks about arrangements.

Over the long weekend, I will be playing the piano, singing, and helping with arrangements. Chris will be producing, arranging, and whatnot.

We’ll see how this goes.

Note to Chris: it’s the whatnot that’ll get you, every time.

Whatnot may or may not include the following: piano, vocals, electric and acoustic guitar, synthesizers, drum beats, programming, turntables, DAW recording and engineering, or whatever else comes to mind at the time. Probably coffee making too.

No coffee for me… I don’t usually drink it. But I will need directions from your house to the nearest convenience store offering diet Pepsi on tap.

Whatnot may also include therapy sessions following my Don Music-esque breakdowns. “I’ll never get it! Never! NEVER!”

You will be my daughter’s comic hero if you do. This is one of her favourites:

I’m sure you will fare much better, though.
