Splish Splash

30 08 2008

Kids are taking a bath, so we’re taking a break from vox and Chris is doing something all technical and probably complicated. We have half of the main vocals done, provided we don’t opt to redo them once the songs have been fleshed out. Everything sounds clean and spacious. So far, so good. Also, my friend Julie, who is Chris’ wife, made dinner including apple pie. And I got to read to an adorable little girl but do not have to put her to bed or put her through college. Other people’s kids are awesome.

Day 1 – afternoon – recording

30 08 2008

–typing very quietly–

Recording Gayleen singing “Hyde”. Take 5. Without recording at a panicked, rushed pace at all, so far we have recorded the raw piano tracks for all 10 songs, plus main vocal tracks for two songs, not including this one.

Take 6.

Also started playing other instrument tracks on “Souria” while we waited for a break in the weather – aka a period of quiet so we can record vocals (my condensor mic is very sensitive and picks up stuff going on upstairs when people are walking around, etc).

Good take – keep it and record another one. Take 7.

Anyway, for the brief time I was recording other tracks for Souria, I had my first taste of how different the tracks can sound once you expand out from solo piano. It’s going to be fun…

Gotta go. I have to say, it’s nice to be in the studio, listening to Gayleen sing. I like it.

Vox

Doin’ some vocals. Might redo tomorrow once the tracks are fuller, since I’ll have a better idea of the overall sound.
Right now, we’ve got kids napping upstairs and will try to get some more vocals down in the quiet time before they wake up.

Checking for Suck

30 08 2008

Chris is checking my piano tracks against his metronome to see how often and how far I went off the beat. Results so far are varying by track–some seem pretty good. For at least one, I don’t know what I did or how. Chris seems no less baffled.
In other news, I’m typing on my iPod because it’s picking up the wifi network here. My laptop? Not so much.

Day 1 – morning – in the studio

30 08 2008

Right now we’re recording Gayleen’s piano in the studio.

She came and dropped off her gear last night – a dusty old Korg digital piano, an Alesis sound module, a well-worn acoustic guitar, and other odds and ends. I spent last night patching her gear into my studio, tested it all – it worked, so far so good.

We got started this morning around 9 and soon the rich piano chords of Wake the Dead filled the studio. My daughter Gillian heard this and started ballet dancing outside the studio door.

It didn’t take too long for the first few recording glitches to reveal themselves, though. Anyone who has ever done recording knows this is not a matter of if, but when. :-)

There was one software crash, needing a computer restart.

In the middle of one take, the piano sound she was playing on her Alesis module switched to a big loud synth brass patch without any warning. We tried another take, and it did it again! I think it was trying to awaken the hidden Europe within her.

Then her piano started dropping notes as she was playing – she would play the notes on the keyboard but some sporatically resulted in no sound. Other MIDI weirdness started happening too. This was getting pretty bad, and we had to stop.

Luckily, it seems the simplest of fixes is working. After some troubleshooting, it seems the problem was just a crappy MIDI cable. I’ve replaced the cable, and everything is working fine. Knock on wood.

Now we’re knocking off the raw piano tracks for each song, one by one.

Later,

Chris
